How much louder is +6 dB?
About twice as loud in signal level. +10 dB sounds roughly twice as loud to most people.
What does normalize do?
It measures the loudest moment and raises everything so that moment is just below full volume, without distortion.
Why does very loud boosting sound squashed?
A limiter keeps the sound from going over full volume. Big boosts on already-loud audio flatten the peaks.
