How to add subtitles to a video automatically, for free
Updated · about 5 minutes
Auto Subtitles listens to your video with an AI speech model that runs inside your browser, writes captions with a time for every word, and lets you correct and style them before you export.

- 1
Open Auto Subtitles and add your video
Choose a video with speech. The sound is decoded on your device.
- 2
Pick the model and language
Balanced is a good default. Choose the spoken language if you know it (Hindi switches to a model trained on Hindi). "Detect automatically" also works.
- 3
Generate captions
Press Generate captions. The model downloads once (about 40–180 MB depending on the size you picked) and is cached for next time.
- 4
Fix words
Click any word to correct it; its timing stays. You can split or merge lines and use find & replace for names.
- 5
Style and place
Pick one of 26 styles (karaoke highlight, one word at a time, boxes, outlines) and drag the captions anywhere on the video.
- 6
Export
Burn the captions into an MP4/WebM, or download SRT, VTT or TXT to upload to YouTube or another platform.
Tips
- Clear speech with little music gives the best results. "Accurate" handles accents and noise better.
- For YouTube, upload the SRT file instead of burning captions in: viewers can switch them off.
